Peninsula Masonry does it all when it comes to stonework. We handcraft full stone veneers, shaped and pitched by hammer and chisel. We are meticulous with intricate stone patterns, and are experienced with real and manufactured stone veneer systems alike.

From decorative bond veneers to multi width brick walls or structural brick, C.M.U. walls (concrete block) of impenetrable construction; we can do it all! We have a vast amount of knowledge in different installation procedures related to brick, block and stone laying.

If the integrity of a masonry structure is compromised, we are well-versed in the appropriate action necessary to prevent leakage and uphold structural integrity.

We restore all masonry, and chimneys are the most common masonry that needs restoration. Chimneys are by nature very exposed to the elements. Because of this, they tend to degrade much faster than other masonry. If they are well maintained, they can last longer before needing to be restored. Maintaining a chimney typically involves keeping it’s flashing on the roof in good working order, keeping the chimney clean from moss, algae and lichen, and replacing the chimney crown or terracotta flue liner when they crack. We offer all of these services to keep your chimney well maintained. 

Eventually, all chimneys need more than simple maintenance. Cracks begin to appear, bricks start to spall, mortar joints start to wash away from the elements, and eventually, the masonry begins to fail and fall. You can avoid costly rebuilds by having your chimney repaired or restored. 

Fireboxes degrade over time, due to the constant temperature changes from the regular fires. Cracks in the firebrick and/or joints are inevitable. This has been the cause of countless housefires. Cracked firebrick can usually be easily replaced, and cracked joints can be restored, reducing any chance of an unexpected house fire. Having to rebuild a firebox is the exception, not the rule.  

Masonry Maintenance

Why does masonry need maintenance?

Over time, mortar loses its integrity. It begins to crumble, and fall away. Because of this, the mortar joints need to be restored by having the old mortar ground out, and new mortar tuckpointed back in. If this is not done, eventually the chimney will need to be torn down and rebuilt. Some masonry can last over a hundred years without needing any maintenance or restoration. Sometimes, it needs some degree of attention after just a few years. It all depends on how it was built, and the environment that it is in. 

Because of this, all masonry should be periodically inspected. We offer free inspections for all things masonry.
